Aquamarines are the highly transparent and light-blue coloured variety of the Beryl mineral family (to which emeralds also belong). Unlike emeralds, however, aquamarines are harder and more durable since these stones are mostly free from the many inclusions present in most emeralds.
Most aquamarines come from Brazil – where the so-called ‘Santa-Maria’ stones command a high value due to their exquisite transparency and vivid hues. Other countries of origin include Zambia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, India, and Burma.
In astrology, aquamarines are considered to be alternatives to blue sapphires, and are thought to augment one’s decision-making and leadership skills. Additionally, it is also believed that wearing aquamarines can help enhance one’s spiritual and personal growth, as well as strengthen communication and self-expression.
